Cephalotus

Cephalotus are unique carnivorous plants native to Australia, admired for their compact growth and beautifully shaped pitchers. Under strong lighting, they can develop deep red to purple tones, making them a stunning addition to any carnivorous plant collection.

They are slow-growing plants with sensitive roots, so they prefer stable conditions and should not be repotted or disturbed too often.

  • Cephalotus grow best in a well-draining mineral-free substrate. Our preferred mix is 3 parts of quartz and 1 part peat moss.

Always make sure the substrate contains no added fertilizer, as Cephalotus are very sensitive to minerals and nutrients in the soil.

  • Like most carnivorous plants, Cephalotus require pure water only. Use rainwater, distilled water, reverse osmosis water or ZeroWater-filtered water.

Keep the substrate lightly moist, but never constantly soggy. Cephalotus are sensitive to overwatering, so avoid letting the pot sit in water for long periods.

  • Cephalotus need bright light to grow well and develop their best coloration. Under strong artificial lighting, we usually keep them around 8 inches from the light source.

With lower light intensity, the plant may stay greener and produce fewer carnivorous pitchers.

  • Cephalotus can be prone to root rot if kept too wet for too long. To reduce the risk, water from the bottom when needed, then allow the pot to drain and slightly dry before watering again.

Good airflow, bright light, and a well-draining substrate are key to keeping them healthy.
